What Is Copyediting?

Reviewing and correcting written material to improve grammar, spelling, punctuation, usage, readability, style, and fitness for its purpose and to ensure that it is free from error, omission, inconsistency, and repetition; may include verifying reference citations via PubMed or other website.


What Is Substantive Editing?

More extensive than copyediting; includes editing for clarity, accuracy, and internal consistency, verifying mathematical calculations, verifying reference citations, and may include styling for a journal.


What Is Fact Checking?

Verifying that the text or data are supported by the reference that is cited, that the correct text or data in the reference are highlighted and any annotations are accurate, and that reference numbers coincide with the correct citation in the reference list.


What Is Proofreading?

Checking the layout copy word for word against the manuscript (or original) copy. Proofreading that occurs at later stages may include a line check rather word for word proofing or proofreading to ensure changes were entered correctly (eg, client review changes).

I am in Raleigh, North Carolina, which is in the Eastern time zone. Because my hours are flexible, I work successfully with clients in other US and international time zones.
